From Home School to College - aside from the comment about "Home-schooled students should consider rounding out their educational plan with summer programs and community college courses" this is a decent article

It's very horrifying when things like this happen, and I TOTALLY respect your choice to homeschool (I did so myself for a while and would still be doing so if my son had not made the choice to be in high school) but we have to keep in mind that these things make the news BECAUSE THEY ARE ABERRATIONS. If stuff like this happened all the time, it wouldn't be newsworthy.

I've taught in public schools (four of them, in two separate regions of the U.S.)on and off for 16 years, and I have never had a student hit or threaten me or another student, never worked with anyone accused or suspected of molesting students(and never heard of any such thing in any nearby districts), never had a student bring a weapon into my class, etc. Only once have I seen any violence in the schools; I came upon a fistfight between two 14 year old boys, who stopped immediately when I told them to, followed me quietly to the office, called me at home over the weekend to apologize for their behavior, and went on to work their butts off the rest of the year to show me that they were good kids.

Mostly, kids are safer in school than they are at home. By no means do I mean YOUR kids or MY kids are safer at school than in OUR homes. But in general, it's way more common for kids to be abused by their own family members than by strangers, whether those strangers are other kids, scout leaders, teachers, coaches, pastors, etc.

I'm sure you have many wonderful reasons for homeschooling, but it makes me a little sad that (judging only by this blog) a major one seems to be fear.

Great blog here Meg...I'm stalking you!!

I found your badhomeschoolmom from Thursday 13...

One of the funniest things people ask me about why we homeschool is,"are you worried that you are being too protective of your kids?" like DUH!!! Isn't that our job to protect our kids???? My kids aren't isolated by anymeans, I'm just trying to allow my kids to enjoy their childhood and be KIDS!!!
