Fun with Physics

From time to time something really fun comes along but for one reason or another we can't take all the kids so my husband and I do the only responsible, adult thing. We rock, paper, scissors for it. Sadly, this time, he won and got to take the boy to a physics class...at an indoor skydiving place, iFly. So. Jealous. But I'll get to go next time. iFly is a nationwide indoor skydiving company and many of their locations offer daytime homeschool physics classes from time to time. To be honest, my husband described the education as a little light but the overall experience was worth it as a supplement to any study of physics or, like in their case, just a fun bonding trip. He equated the professionalism and "show" quality to that of Disney - high praise from my husband.  One small warning: if, like my husband you were born with chipmunk cheeks, they will flap in the wind and make all the children around laugh and point at you.  If you do go, go for

One Small Step

This year, I'm taking each kid (well, each kid who can walk) on a trip just the two of us. First up was my first born...my boy...my heart...my tween. Where did we go? Houston. To have LUNCH WITH AN ASTRONAUT at the Johnson Space Center. *Scroll to the bottom for resources we used that really helped to supplement our trip* We met Joshua who had to work a half day that Thursday morning, switched cars, and said our goodbyes before running to the grocery store. The Boy got to pick all the road trip snacks and drinks. It was magical. When you're one of four and the other three are all girls, the struggle is real. We stayed with family friends in Katy and arrived pretty late so we went straight to bed. When we woke up, our friends were busying themselves with getting ready for work and school while we got dressed and read a children's book written by Colonel Jerry Ross - the astronaut NASA had scheduled for the day.  * The Space Center holds the Lunch with an Astronaut twi

I Hereby Declare

Yesterday, the kids and I were honored to attend a naturalization ceremony (sometimes called a citizenship ceremony). One of SweetP's co-op teachers from last semester, Miss Elena was born in Russia and after a nearly 15 year ordeal, she was sworn in as an American citizen. The morning started out rough. I overslept the alarm and woke up ten minutes before we were supposed to leave but thankfully I had pulled clothes and shoes the night before and already had a diaper bag in my truck. We got ready (with teeth brushed and everything!) faster than I thought possible and because we live in the middle of nowhere and everything is an hour drive, we drove a little faster and made it to the USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) office about twenty minutes before the ceremony was scheduled to begin. We needed those twenty minutes just to get through security. We found our seats and waited...because like everything else government related, hurry up and wait is t

Never thought I'd say this but...

I'm blogging again. A long time ago in a blogosphere far, far away, I wrote a small military wife blog that kept me sane through basic training, deployment, reintegration, and drill weekends. More babies came and life got busy so I stopped but now as the kids are getting bigger (and doing more fun things), I want to document our homeschool journey - particularly for those days when my eye is twitching and I'm jealous of the moms who put their kids on those big beautiful yellow buses. Before I go any further, I want to be as clear as possible. Yes, we are a homeschool family. Yes, it works great for us. No, I don't think it's the only "right" way to educate children. No, I don't care if you think I'm ruining my children. Yes...No...Maybe...I don't know if or when we'll stop homeschooling but if or when we do, it won't be because some internet troll tells us to. So...who are we? Dad - Joshua Mom - me/Brianna Kid #1 - Turtle 9 yrs
